Kasper Schmeichel could have many more years to come at Celtic, according to his father.

Manchester United treble winner Peter Schmeichel has hinted that he still sees a long playing career ahead for the 37-year-old who has made a stellar start to life in Glasgow.

Kasper, who replaced Joe Hart as the Hoops number 1 this summer on an initial one-year deal, has yet to concede a goal in the SPFL.

Speaking in an interview with Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet, Peter Schmeichel played down any notion that his son was approaching the twilight of his career. “Whether you’re 14 or 40 doesn’t matter if you help the team win,” he said.

“I watch every eternal match that my son plays, and I see no difference between now and ten years ago.”

He added: “For me, it doesn’t feel like it’s towards the end. It doesn’t, so there’s nothing sad about it. I think the focus must lie somewhere else entirely.”

The goalkeeper arrived at Celtic Park on a free transfer after his contact expired with Anderlecht, reuniting with manager Brendan Rodgers after the pair worked together at Leicester City.

Some had questioned whether the Danish international would be able to adapt to the demands of the Scottish Premiership at the age of 37, but he has quickly established himself as a leader and key figure within the Hoops’ squad.

“I see many, many, many good years ahead of him,” his father concluded, suggesting he does not anticipate Kasper winding down any time soon.
