Simon Donnelly has praised Anthony Ralston’s resilience and mentality shown over the international break.

The 25-year-old featured in both of Scotland’s opening Nations League fixtures against Poland and Portugal amid Steve Clarke’s injury crisis at right-back.

Despite only making three appearances off the bench for Celtic this season, Ralston has clocked up valuable minutes on international duty.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, former Celt Simon Donnelly hailed Ralston’s displays for Scotland despite not being a regular starter for Brendan Rodgers at club level.

He said: “I think, with Ralston, I think a lot of it’s mentality. Because he came in for a bit of stick in the Euros. The other night, after making the mistake, it’s a clumsy tackle for the penalty, but he’s there for the assist.

“He can put mistakes behind him; we know he’s not even the regular at Celtic, but he’s in there now, and he’s doing a job.”

A mixed evening for the defender at Hampden saw him both claim an assist and concede a penalty in the opener against Poland, with the right-back doing well to keep Rafael Leao at bay in Thursday’s away tie against Portugal.

Host Ewan Cameron added: “He did well last night against Leao. Great performance all in all from Ralston and from Gilmour, who stood out, and McTominay, who was outstanding.”
