A Celtic fan has tragically died in a horror crash after 'boarding the wrong bus' following Saturday's match against Hearts.

It has been reported that John Burns passed away after being hit by a vehicle on the M6 near Carlisle on Saturday, September 14.

The youngster - who is believed to be 22 - was in the area after getting on the wrong bus following the Celtic v Hearts clash at Parkhead in Glasgow.

It is believed he was then hit by a vehicle shortly after 8pm that evening.

Following his tragic death, the young lad's devastated family and friends have paid tribute to him on social media.

One said: "Heartbreaking. So sorry."

Another added: "So sorry. Thinking of you and your gorgeous boy."

A third said: "Heartbreaking. Sending lots of love to you."

Meanwhile, a post on the Facebook page The Parkhead Faithful has urged Hoops fans to participate in a minute of applause for the young man during tomorrow night's match.

The post said: "Minutes applause. John Burns would have been 23 on Wednesday, the same day his beloved club play in Europe.

"Could we ask for everyone to join in and participate in a minute's applause on the 23rd minute.

"We have seen multiple fans and pages asking for this and we will. It would be the least we could do as a Celtic family at this terrible time.

"Rest easy John."

Fellow fans flocked to the comments of the post to pay tribute to John.

One said: "RIP wee man. Far too young to leave this earth at such a young age."

A second added: "This is absolutely heartbreaking. May you rest in peace.

"My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Another said: "This is so sad and breaks my heart. RIP."

Meanwhile, another Hoops fan group also called for the minute's applause.

Celtic Fan Group said: "This is John. He recently lost his life aged just 22. No age at all. 

"He was at the Celtic game on Saturday. No one should ever go to a game and not come home. No one.

"We ask that you please join in the minute's applause on the 23rd minute on Wednesday night.

"Rest easy John."

Following his death, a fundraiser has been set up to help John's family out.

The GoFundMe reads: "I'm hoping you all can give something to help some unneeded pressure of finances of John's family - it's the last thing they need when dealing with such a sudden loss.

"John was loved by all his family and friends. He was just about to turn 23 and sadly God took him too soon.

"He has a gorgeous wee boy and partner and really was adored for just being wee John.

"Let's give him the send-off he deserves."

Cumbria Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on the M6 at Junction 42 near Carlisle.

In a statement, the force said: "The incident occurred at 8.05pm on Saturday, September 14.

"Officers are requesting anyone who witnessed a pedestrian or has dashcam and were travelling in the area of Junction 42 either on the roundabout/bridges or travelling on the M6 Northbound and Southbound between 7.50pm and 8.10pm on September 14 to contact police so an officer can review any footage.

"Anyone with information relating to this incident can report online at www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it, quoting incident number 238 of September 14, 2024.
