The Celtic FC Women's side have etched their names into the history books by becoming the first Scottish team to qualify for the UEFA Women's Champions League group stage.

Elena Sadiku's side went into the Round Two tie's second leg this evening 1-0 up on aggregate by virtue of a fifth-minute Murphy Agnew strike last weekend.

Simply avoiding defeat would have sent the Scottish champions through, but second half goals from Shannon McGregor and Emma Louise Lawton saw Celtic win 2-0 on the night.

In turn, Celtic have become the first Scottish team to reach the competition's lucrative group stages, following the formal introduction of a group stage to the tournament at the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign.

It is worth noting that domestic rivals Glasgow City have previously reached the last-16 of the UEFA Women's Cup before (in 2008; the equivalent of today's group-stage), and the competition's quarter-final in 2015, however Celtic's achievement makes them history-makers nevertheless.

As reported earlier this month, both legs of the Round Two tie will be held at Airdrieonians' Excelsior Stadium – the Celtic women's side home ground – as a result of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The draw for the UEFA Women's Champions League group stage is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 27 at 12pm UK time.
