St Mirren should have been awarded a penalty during Sunday's game against Rangers. 

That's the view of pundit Michael Stewart.

Philippe Clement's side emerged 2-1 winners from the Scottish Premiership encounter at Ibrox yesterday afternoon.

Vaclav Cerny continued his fine form from Thursday night to secure all three points for the Light Blues.

However, with the score at 1-1 in the second half - after Alex Gogic had cancelled out Mohamed Diomande's earlier opener - St Mirren had claims for a penalty waved away by the officials.

Striker Toyosi Olusanya went to ground inside the box after an apparent trip by Gers defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo.

However, referee Calum Scott decided to pull play back for a foul by Nicolas Raskin on Greg Kiltie just outside the box instead. 

Greg Atiken on VAR opted not to step in to advice an on-field review at the pitchside monitor.

Appearing on BBC's Sportscene, Stewart believes that a spot kick should've been given to the Buddies.

The former Hearts and Hibs midfielder said: "The contact is not immediately obvious but there is a close up from low behind where you see Kasanwirjo catches Olusanya as he is spinning.

"And when you are spinning and you are knocked off that is a foul. That knocks him off balance and that should have been given as a penalty kick."

Stephen Robinson was left unimpressed by the flashpoint post-match. 

He said: "I don’t think there was a decision that went anywhere in our direction.

"I have asked for explanations for them, which I never usually do. They got explained to me but whether I agree with them or not doesn’t really matter.

“We’ve had two brilliant chances in the first half, and arguably there is a penalty in there as well. The explanation (from the referee) was that it wasn’t, so I have to trust that VAR has got it right.”
