Danny Murphy believes “never say never” when it comes to Steven Gerrard returning to manage Rangers.
The under-fire Al-Ettifaq boss has endured a difficult start to the season in the Saudi Pro League and was booed by his own supporters on Saturday after a 2-0 derby defeat to Al Qadisiyah at home.
Gerrard’s side currently sit 11th in the league table after losing four of their last six games, with reports suggesting he could soon face the sack.
Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy was quizzed on the likelihood of Gerrard’s return to Ibrox after his exit for Aston Villa in 2021. Speaking to Boylesports, Murphy said: “I think it would be hard to replicate what Steven Gerrard did at Rangers before because they're struggling.

“Their squad is inferior to Celtic and the gap has got much bigger since he left.
“But he's a determined man who wants to work hard and if he was to go back there and then win the league again and overcome Celtic again then it would be a huge achievement.
“It’s hard to see him being back there but never say never.
