THE funeral of a legendary Celtic player who passed away will take place tonight.

Supporters are expected to line The Celtic Way to pay their respects to Tommy Callaghan after he died at the age of 78 last month.

His funeral procession will pass Celtic Park at 5.10pm.

A statement posted to the Parkhead club's X [formerly Twitter] account reads: "The funeral procession for Tommy Callaghan will make its way down The Celtic Way at 5.10pm this evening.

"Supporters are invited to come and pay their respects to a Celtic FC great."

Tributes have poured in for the former midfielder who spent eight years at Parkhead and was part of the Hoops' famous nine-a-row winning side in the 1974 season.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers paid tribute to Callaghan dubbing him "a real legend of the club".

Previously speaking at Lennoxtown on October 25 he said: "I had a message this morning from young Tommy, the son, to say his dad had passed away.

"So, I think all our thoughts and condolences are with Tommy. I think any player that's been signed twice by Jock Stein tells you how good a player he was.

"And it's always sad. I bumped into Tommy a few weeks only back and yeah, sad day, but a real legend of the club.

"All our thoughts are with his family."

Callaghan joined Celtic from Dunfermline in 1968 and went on to make 264 appearances for Jock Stein's side.

Across a trophy-laden career with the Hoops, Callaghan won six league titles, five Scottish Cups, and three League Cups.

He left Celtic in 1976 to join Clydebank, where he spent two years before finishing his career with Galway Rovers in Ireland.
