PSG won their first European trophy in 1996 when a Bruno N’Gotty goal gave them a 1-0 victory over Rapid Vienna in Brussels…
SEAN DOCHERTY (Paisley) Please give details of the match between Celtic and PSG at Celtic Park in 1995 or 96?
This was a European Cup-Winners’ Cup tie played on November 2, 1995, in front of around 35,000 fans at a partially reconstructed Celtic Park. Paris St Germain led 1-0 from the first leg in Paris, leaving Celtic with a very difficult task, and one which they would find insurmountable.
An excellent PSG side, featuring future Celtic left-back Stephane Mahe and future Rangers manager Paul Le Guen, opened the scoring after 34 minutes, when Patrice Loko accepted a gift from Gordon Marshall, knocking home after the keeper fumbled a shot from Laurent Fournier.
Loko then doubled the lead seven minutes later when he volleyed in a cross from the brilliant Youri Djorkaeff.
Another Djorkaeff cross lead to a third and final goal after 68 minutes, this time setting up Pascal Nouma.
Celtic were in truth outclassed throughout both legs, whilst PSG would prove their excellence by going on to win the tournament.
Celtic: Marshall, Vata (Donnelly, 45), Hughes, Boyd, McKinlay, McStay, Grant, Collins, Thom, Walker, Van Hooijdonk (McLaughlin, 62).
PSG: Lama, Cobos, Le Guen, Mahe (Dieng, 27), Fournier (Llacer, 68), Bravo, Guerin, Djorkaeff, Loko (Nouma, 58), Rai.
JIM (Springburn) After reading your Now You Know question last week regarding Partick Thistle’s poor record against Celtic, I was thinking that they also have a terrible record against Rangers. Could you tell me the last time Thistle beat Rangers?
The match was a league game at Firhill on Tuesday, May 4, 1993, which had been re-scheduled from its original March date.
Rangers had clinched the league championship the previous Saturday and reports suggest that the Partick players formed a guard of honour as Rangers took the field.
This show of congratulation was quickly put aside when the game kicked off and Thistle went ahead in the opening minutes through Ray Farningham.
Rangers were again slow to start after the interval and Grant Tierney quickly put Thistle two ahead before Gerry Britton sealed a 3-0 victory for Thistle.
I am sure Thistle supporters will like to be reminded of the team that night.
Partick Thistle: Nelson, Law, McLaughlin, Jamieson, Tierney, Irons, McKilligan, Farningham, Britton, Cameron, and Craig.
Rangers: Maxwell, Murray, Watson, Gough, Kutznetsov, Brown, Gordon, Durrant, McSwegan, Hateley, and Huistra.
