THE Old Firm play each other twice within six days next month and the Light Blue legions will be looking for a similar result to what they achieved when the sides met at Ibrox during a hard-fought league encounter in 1977…
GEORGE C (Govan) Any info on an Old Firm game in the late Seventies at Ibrox, where Celtic were ahead 2-0 at half-time but lost the game 3-2?
You may be thinking about the match played on September 10, 1977.
The early-season encounter saw Celtic leading 2-0 at half-time with goals from Edvaldsson in the 18th and 31st minutes.
The first half had been all Celtic but things changed after the break.
An injury to Derek Parlane forced Rangers into a reshuffle and John Greig came on to bolster the defence with Derek Johnstone moving from centre-half to centre-forward.
With Big Derek leading the line Rangers went on to score three for no reply in the second half.
Gordon Smith scored twice in 53 and 81 minutes and Johnstone himself in the 64th minute.
Rangers; McCloy, Jardine, Miller, Forsyth, Johnstone, MacDonald, McKean, Russell, Parlane, Smith, Cooper.
Celtic; Latchford, McGrain, Lynch, Edvaldsson, MacDonald, Casey, Doyle, Dowie, Glavin, Burns, Wilson.
D HENDERSON (Milngavie) The sad passing of Lisbon Lion Tommy Gemmell last month reminded me of my first visit to the San Siro Stadium in Milan seven years ago when I said to my young son that a Scotsman (Gemmell) had scored in this stadium in the 1970 European Cup Final. I wondered if any other Scottish player has scored in the San Siro for club, country or non-Scots club against/for AC, Inter or Italy?
The first Scot to score at the San Siro Stadium was Alan Cousin of Dundee FC who scored in the first leg of the European Cup semi-final in 1963.
Other Scots to score in the stadium were Jim Forrest (Rangers), Joe Jordan (Milan), Dominic Matteo (Leeds Utd) and Denis Law in 1960 when he played for the English Football League Select v Italian League Select.
Denis also played for Torino in Italy from 1961 to 1962 and scored 10 League goals and could have scored at the San Siro.
Sheila Begbie also scored for Scotland Women’s team at the San Siro and Rose Reilly who played for several Italian teams and represented Italy at international level probably scored at the San Siro.
